Charter FAQs
1. What exactly does Serendipity Sailing Charters do?
- We act as your independent sailboat broker and charter concierge. We:
- Help you choose the right destination and time of year
- Recommend the best charter company and boat for your needs
- Arrange a bareboat or skippered charter
- Assist with itinerary planning and practical details
- Handle the booking directly with the charter company on your behalf
- You get expert guidance and support, usually at no additional cost to you.
2. Do I pay more to use a boat broker?
No. In fact, you may pay the same or less than booking directly.
Charter companies pay us a commission for bringing them clients, so our service is typically built into the standard charter pricing. You get:
- The charter company’s regular or promotional rates
- Our expertise and support at no extra charge
- Access to special offers or discounts when available
3. What’s the difference between a bareboat charter and a skippered charter?
- Bareboat charter – You (or someone in your group) are the skipper, responsible for sailing and navigating the boat. Ideal for experienced sailors who want full control and flexibility.
- Skippered charter – We arrange a professional local skipper to handle the boat. You can be as hands-on or hands-off as you like. Perfect for non-sailors, newer sailors, or anyone who wants to relax and focus on the destination.
We can also help arrange additional crew (hostess, cook, deckhand) in some destinations.
4. What qualifications do I need to charter a bareboat?
Requirements vary by country and charter company, but may include:
- Sailing résumé or log of experience
- Formal certifications (e.g., ASA, RYA) in some destinations
- A valid license or ICC (International Certificate of Competence) in certain European waters
- We’ll review your experience with you and advise on where you’re qualified to bareboat—and when it makes sense to add a skipper.
5. Can you help me decide which destination is best for my group?
Absolutely—that’s one of the main reasons people use us.
We’ll ask about:
- Your preferred travel dates and trip length
- Your sailing experience
- Whether you’re bringing kids, non-sailors, or first-time travelers
- Your budget and comfort expectations
- The vibe you want (quiet and remote, lively and social, culture and food, etc.)
Then we’ll recommend one or more destinations and suggested itineraries that fit.
6. What types of boats can I charter?
We work with a range of boats, including:
- Monohull sailboats – Classic sailing feel, often less expensive and more performance-oriented.
- Sailing catamarans – Very popular for charters: lots of space, stability, and comfort for families and groups.
- In some destinations, power catamarans or motoryachts as well.
We’ll help you compare options and choose the best fit for your group and budget.
7. How far in advance should I book?
For the best selection and pricing:
- High season (holidays, school breaks, peak summer/winter): 9–12+ months in advance is ideal.
- Shoulder seasons: 6–9 months is usually fine.
- Last-minute trips: Sometimes possible, especially in less busy periods—we’re happy to check availability.
8. How does payment work?
Typically:
- A deposit is due at the time of booking to secure the boat.
- The balance is due 60-90 days before departure (exact timelines vary by charter operator).
9. Do I need travel insurance or charter insurance?
We strongly recommend some combination of:
- Travel insurance (for trip interruption, medical emergencies, etc.)
- Charter damage waiver or security deposit insurance, depending on the charter company’s policy
We’ll explain the options and typical requirements so you can make an informed decision.
10. What about provisioning, transfers, and other logistics?
We can help you understand and organize:
- Provisioning options (pre-ordering groceries vs. shopping locally)
- Airport-to-marina transfers
- Recommended nearby hotels if you arrive a day early
- Restaurants, activities, and “must-see” spots along your route
Some services are provided by the charter company, some by local partners; we’ll help you choose what makes sense.
11. Is a sailing charter a good option for families with kids?
Yes—many families find it’s one of their best vacations ever.
We’ll help match you with:
- Kid-friendly destinations and routes
- Boats with appropriate cabin layouts and safety features
- Skippers (if desired) who are great with families
We’ll also discuss realistic daily distances, anchorages with beaches, and how to keep everyone comfortable and happy onboard.
12. What if the weather is bad?
Weather is a natural part of any sailing trip. The charter company and skipper (if you have one) will prioritize safety and adjust routes as needed.
In most cases, trips proceed with adjusted itineraries.
Formal refunds or rescheduling due to weather depend on the charter company’s contract and local regulations.
We’ll review these terms with you before you book so you know what to expect.
13. How do I tip the skipper or crew?
Tipping customs vary by region, but a common guideline is:
- Skipper: Often 10–20% of the charter fee, depending on service and local norms.
- Additional crew: Sometimes pooled tips or separate gratuities.
We’ll provide destination-specific tipping guidance before your trip.
14. Why should I use Serendipity instead of booking directly with a charter company?
- In short: expert, unbiased help at no extra cost.
- We compare multiple companies and fleets, not just one.
- We know which bases and boats are best in a given area.
- We help with destination and itinerary planning, not just the booking.
- You have a single, trusted point of contact before and during your trip.
