England  The Coast-to-Coast Hike

May 7 - 15, 2023  £1,325

It's known as the Coast-to-Coast hike, or C2C,  perfect as it's also a Sea-to-Sea hike!: The Irish to the North.

I love the accomplishment aspect of this hike-- it's always great when a journey has a goal, and how many other places can one cross a country from sea-to-sea in eight or nine days?  But this trip has features that make that secondary.  We'll see the most spectacular beauty of England, while experiencing the village, inn, and pub culture that is such an attraction in its own right.  Tackle one of the world's most famous hikes!

Like perhaps many of you, I have been to London and Windsor, even Dover, but I’ve never really seen the ‘country’ of England.  And I don’t really relish the idea of driving a right-side steering wheel on the left side of one lane roads to see it.  It’s not necessary in a country where “walking” is a national pastime.-- the ultimate in slow travel!  This walk takes us through three of the most famous National Parks in England: the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, and the North York Moors!  All while accomplishing the feat/feet of crossing a country!

I have long wanted to make this trip, and 2023 is the 50th anniversary of this route being made popular by Alfred Wainwright.  It's also a great year to go because of the devaluation of the Pound (but I had to price it in  GBP due to it's potential fluctuation).

This is truly a hiking trip, so you do need to be in moderately good shape, and able to walk for most of each day, up to eight hours, depending on your pace!  There are no set times, other than to reach your reserved hotel each night.  In keeping with the more independent nature of my trips, I won’t be ‘leading’ you—it has been shown that people pay less attention and see less when following.  You will be able to set your own pace and stop as often as you like.  You’ll likely find others with a similar pace, and with the popularity of this journey, it’s common to make new friends along the way.  I’ll provide you with directions and maps, reservations, and transfer your luggage (no ‘lugging’!), but no one can walk for you, so assess your ability honestly. You will be on a trail, often without roads nearby.

We'll hike the most scenic part of England, not the narrowest, so walking every step of this section would take closer to two weeks.  We'll use local transport between the areas out of the parks to shorten the walk to eight days.  If you are a hiking purist, I can make arrangements for you to literally hike each mile.
